Director of Instruction, Learning Services (Special Programs)-Filled!!!

Our large, urban and multicultural school district provides a rich array of programs to more than 50,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Serving our diverse district, our programs and services are designed to address complex challenges and provide extraordinary opportunities.

As the Director of Instruction, Learning Services (Special Programs), you will have overall district responsibility for all Special Education programs and services, including a wide variety of gifted, behaviour support, and other specialized programs for diverse learners.   In addition, you will have responsibility for oversight of English language learners and programs, as well as all programs and initiatives in the area of Social and Emotional Learning. Your expert knowledge of innovative educational practices in special education and your passion and vision for how students may achieve their own unique potential will serve you well in this complex role.

As one of the leaders of the Learning Services team, you will work closely with your colleagues at both the school and district level to ensure that the needs of diverse learners are included in all educational conversations and initiatives.  Along with leading and motivating your large, committed staff in the Learning Services department, you will serve as a member of the District Management Team and will be involved in the annual budgeting process, infusing your knowledge of diverse learners into the many strategic and priority-setting conversations.  In addition to providing educational leadership, you will plan and manage your departmental budgets, identify opportunities for growth and change, and champion a workplace climate that is positive, respectful and focused on student learning.

Outstanding interpersonal, problem solving and communication skills are key to success as you will build, maintain and establish new relationships with parents and community partners who share your vision of a strongly inclusive and invigorating learning culture for all students. You will also liaise with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Children and Family Development, provincial resource programs and other organizations that have an interest in the success of students in our district.

Your background is exemplary. It includes extensive experience and graduate work in the field of special education and background or course work related to English language learners. Your experience at a senior administrative level is complemented by a Master’s degree in education and eligibility for certification from the Teacher Regulation Branch of British Columbia. Finally, you can clearly articulate a comprehensive understanding of inclusion as it relates to the work of our school district within the public education system.
