Java Software Engineer (Victoria)

Our client is a leading designer and manufacturer of premium communications equipment for High Frequency (HF) and Land Mobile Radio (LMR) applications. Trusted by public safety organizations across North America, they relentlessly focus on high performance and high reliability. They're continuing to build their Victoria, BC team and are recruiting a full-time Intermediate to Senior Software Engineer to help evolve the next generation.

Team, Product and Tools

They work in small teams, employing a light-weight and agile process. The first release of the product is imminent and they're continuing to develop, debug, test, and improve the code. They care about the product they're developing and we’re committed to high standards and long term code quality. You’ll be a key team member, participating in all aspects of creating quality software within a collaborative environment.

Their networked radio systems are developed in-house, including hardware, firmware, software, and user interface layers. Their software stack consists mostly of C, Java, and Python running on an embedded Linux platform. A browser-based interface allows users to configure and control the devices.

Immediate Objectives

·       Learn about the P25 radio standards and how they relate to our product

·       Jump into the scrum process and learn about the architecture and design for a piece of the refactoring effort that you will contribute to

·       The refactoring could involve mining the existing code base for an existing feature implementation, bug fixing, or adding new features

·       Quick study who is able to figure out complex systems

·       Good understanding of software project management and lifecycles

Skills & Experience

·       Strong knowledge of object-oriented programming in Java

·       Good design skills and solid ability to navigate complex code

·       Ability to adhere to applicable industry standards

·       Basic understanding of scripting on Linux with Python

·       Experience with software development tools (IDE, source control, unit tests)

·       Familiarity with scrum/agile methodologies and tools such as JIRA

Nice to Have:

·       Experience with our specific toolchain: IntelliJ, git, Gradle, JUnit, GoCD

·       Familiarity with JIRA, Confluence, Crucible, FishEye

·       Background in any of the following areas: RF, telecommunications, networking, embedded systems, real-time, and distributed systems

·       Knowledge of signal processing would be really helpful (processing of analog and digital audio streams)
